Islamia University Bahawalpur was converted from Jamia Abbasia, which was a religious university and it started working in 1925. Jamia Abbasia was renamed as Islamia University Bahawalpur in 1975 and it has also established its other sub campuses like Abbasia campus, Baghdad al Jadeed campus, Khawaja Fareed campus, Sub Campus Rangers, Sub Campus Rahim Yar Khan and Sub Campus Bahawalnagar.

Islamia University Bahawalpur has 45 departments in which education is being imparted in about 74 disciplines.
